The Montinore Estate Rosso di Marchesi Quinto Atto is made by Rudy Marchesi in Forest Grove, Oregon, inside the Willamette Valley AVA. Since 2005 he’s been producing stellar reds and whites made from vineyards which embrace organic and biodynamic methods. His location means he is knee deep in Pinot Noir, but the wine we’re blurbing about today has extra dimensions. This is the 5th installment of their Oregon version of an Italian red blend. And it’s a non-vintage. Our favorite wine of theirs thus far. Loads of character and an extremely well balanced blend of interesting grape varieties. I won’t wax on about how producers in Oregon should be making more blends like this.
Tasting note: The Quinto Atto is a blend of 52% Sangiovese, 11% Teroldego, 18% Lagrein, 13%Pinot Noir, and 6% Nebbiolo. The look is dark ruby with a magenta edge. Dip a nose in for medium intense aromas of cranberries, sour cherries, raspberries, plums, baking spices, black pepper and citrus peel. The body, alcohol and acidity find the middle ground while the tannins take a tick up. There is definitely a nod to the style of Barolo tannins, just not as crazy. Thanks Nebbiolo. The flavors are youthful and fall right in line with the aromas, just add some dark chocolate and a long finish. Definitely room for development and it would be amazing to see how well this Quinto Atto ages.
