The Benedicte & Stephane Tissot Pinot Noir Sous La Tour 2018 is made at Domaine Andre and Mireille Tissot in the Jura region of France. Founded in the 1960’s in the commune of Montigny-Les-Arsures, the production has grown over the years to 35-45 hectares in size and certified biodynamic. Being certified biodynamic on rugged hillsides means lots of labor, and they have a staff that works the yard year round. Native yeasts and minimal amounts of sulfur are the winery methods, and the wines they produce are great value and worth seeking out. And unique, this Pinot Noir turned our heads, with its savory extracted-ness. This is a unique picture of Pinot Noir from an interesting place. Tremendous quality with decades of ageing potential.

Tasting note: The note I wrote in my book about this wine has lots of scribbling in the margins. A good sign, must have been developing as I was consuming. The aromas are intense and youthful, full of cherries, cranberries, smoke, citrus peel, mushroom, and miso. On the palate it’s a concentrated mash up of cherries, cranberries, tomato paste, fennel, black pepper and brine. The acidity is pulsing and the tannins are grippy. Lastly, the finish is super long and this wine will easily be a knock out in fifteen years.
