The Domaine d’Aupilhac Lou Maset Languedoc Rouge is made in the ancient village of Montpeyroux in the Languedoc. Here is home to one of our favorite producers, Sylvain Fadat at Domaine d’Aupilac. The Fadat family has managed their craggy, limestone-terraced vineyards for three generations. After World War 2 the wine industry in Montpeyroux was in shambles and co-ops were the primary way of life. The Fadat family had the backbone to strike out as an independent producer and started bottling their own wine in 1989. They’ve muscled it out and completed the three year process for organic certification and achieved biodynamic certification in 2014. We recommend all of their wines, but this post is about the Lou Maset Languedoc Rouge. A blend of 40% Grenache, 40% Cinsault, 10% Carignan, 5% Syrah, 5% Alicante Bouchet and ages beautifully. And under $20 a bottle. Try and beat it.

Tasting note: Clear with a ruby core fading to a wide, orange-salmon colored rim, with medium viscosity. Clean, with lifted, intense aromas of black licorice, fig, date, plum, rosemary, ripe raspberries, rose petal, and orange peel. Dry with a medium body, medium alcohol, medium, acid, and medium tannin. Flavors of black licorice, fig, date, dark chocolate, raspberries, thyme, rosemary,  and a saline edge. Medium+ length and medium+ complexity. The lifted perfume of this wine was surprising, and the balance struck seems effortless. The acid and tannin hang together nicely and the finish is clean, underlining the black licorice. This is drinking perfectly right now and has another five years of development (tasted in 2021).
