The Bernhard Ott Fass 4 Gruner Veltliner 2016 is made by the Ott family who has been producing wine in Wagram in Lower Austria since the late 19th century. Bernhard is the 4th generation and took over from his father 1993 when he was 21 years old. He has worked to create the highest quality Gruner Veltliner possible and began his youthful intervention by dumping the old wood casks and moved to stainless steel for fermentation and ageing. Then in 2018 he switched back to using varying sizes of Stockinger fuders (large oval wood barrels). Always evolving, smart. In the early 2000’s he began using local organic cow manure and slowly began transitioning his vineyards to biodynamics. Native yeasts are used for fermentation, the temperature is not controlled and sulfur is used as minimally as possible. These wines are highly expressive wines with restrained fruit flavors.

Tasting Note –  Fass 4 Gruner Veltliner comes from the vineyards around the Austrian town Feuersbrunn and functions as a benchmark wine for the Ott domaine. We’re tasting Fass 4 in 2023 and this 2016 seems like it was bottles yesterday, fresh and elegant. Aromas and flavors of grapefruit, orange, granny smith apple, lime and lime juice, young pea vines, sea brine, and fresh river water. The body and alcohol are nice mediums while the acid is a ratchet up to a medium plus. Both salty and savory qualities with a very long finish. Easily another 20 years of positive development is possible with this wine. It’s under screw cap as well, sky’s the limit.
