The Domaine Giachino Black Giac Mondeuse 2021 comes from limestone slopes on Mount Granier in Savoie. Frederic Gianchino father handed him the keys to the winery in 1988 and young Freddy made it his mission to convert the whole operation to organic viticulture. His brother David joined him in 2006 and with him came the interest in biodynamic methods, and the rest is history. They grow the usual suspect grape varieties, Jacquere, Mondeuse, Gamay, and Altesse and also began planting relatively unknown varieties native to the region like Persan, Mondeuse Blanche, and Verdesse. Can’t wait to see those become available to us! Sustainability is the gas in their engine and the wines they produce are high Alpine beauties. Sommeliers be fussin’ over Mondeuse and now we are making a minor fuss over this delicious, versatile variety. It’s definitely worth knowing so add a little Mondeuse to your life.

Tasting note: Black Giac is a red wine made from organically grown Mondeuse from beautiful hillsides in crisp mountain air. Fermentation takes place with native yeasts over a very long time and is aged for a minute in foudres. The results are a gentle red wine with fine curves and flavors of strawberries and dried cherries. In addition to fruit flavors are hits of thyme, fennel, pine resin and oregano. A savory wine in the truest sense. Absolutely perfect for the dinner table, especially when you have a goat cheese pizza on sourdough crust in your face.
