The Domaine des Carabiniers Lirac 2019 hails from a certified biodynamic family winery near Avignon in the southern Rhone. Christian Leperchois runs the show along his children Fabien and Magali. They make wine from 50 hectares spread across the Lirac, Tavel, Cotes du Rhone and Chateauneuf du Pape AOC’s. A cool detail about their property is that the barn in which the winery is located was used as a horse stable for cavalry soldiers charged with protecting the Pope in Avignon during the middle ages. Some old timbers. Lirac wine is sought after for its quality and price; usually less expensive than their high profile neighbors but are High quality wines. This wine is that wine, a delicious blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah of outstanding quality. Excellent concentration with delicious red fruit flavors and wild countryside.

Tasting note: Cranberries! Is the first thing this beauty shouts. Also aromas and flavors of raspberries, strawberries, fennel, thyme, licorice, mushrooms, lime peel and damp potting soil. A very medium wine with finely honed tannins. The finish is pretty lengthy and while the wine is rugged, it has also a level of complexity that keeps one returning to the glass. And is a perfect accompaniment for a swath of different foods. Lastly, my notes say “friendly” and it’s true, it’s a cheerful wine, bright, sunny and positive, if that makes any sense.
