This Domaine des Rouges Queues Celsius Gamay 2018 is made by Isabelle and Jean-Yves Vantey in Sampigny-Ies-Mananges. They are within the Maranges AOC which is at the south end of the Cote d’Or in Burgundy. Home to some excellent and affordable wines, and for us, bottles that we rarely see in our Seattle market. The Vantey’s began their operation in 1998 and have slowly acquired 5-6 hectares of vines spread across many AOC’s. They farm their plots using organic and biodynamic methods and in the cellar are true non-interventionists. Minimal SO2, spontaneous fermentation, and open top fermenters are the norm. This Gamay is our first taste of Domaine des Rouges Queues and we are totally on board. The lifted, fresh aromas of pepper, fruit, and earth had us scribbling notes and reaching out to our distributors to see if any of their other wines are available. We’ll be stocking them if so.

Tasting note: The color is a light ruby with a magenta rim. The aromas are fresh and lifted, bright, and earthy. Strawberries, cherries, tangy orange peel, damp soil and sweet tobacco. Dry with a medium body and alcohol, little tannin to be found but the acidity is high and keeps the pulse of the fresh red fruit flavors moving. In addition to the strawberries and cherries, tangy orange peel turns to marmalade with dashes of salt and black pepper. An elegant Gamay with fresh flavors and a lithe body, long finish and with massive ageing potential. This is a great wine now and will be an outstanding wine in another ten years, if one can wait.
