The Domaine du Somail Le Vin de Plume is produced in Minervois, which has a rich history dating back to pre-Roman times. The wines of the olden days have a legendarily bad reputation, but no more. Many modern Minervois producers incorporate organic and biodynamic methods into their practice. Why wouldn’t you? It’s hot and dry and there are over 300 rain-free days annually. Fungus isn’t an issue. Somail is one of these producers, operated by the accomplished Julie Diaz and Francois Fabre. They work 15 biodynamic hectares in the eastern corner of Minervois. Sulphur use is at a minimum, and the wines age for 24 months before bottling. This is one of our top picks for high quality, natural wine from this attractive region. Especially this Le Vin de Plume, a blend of 80% Mourvedre and 20% Syrah, punches way above its weight.

Tasting note: The 2020 Le Vin de Plume is a blend of 80% Mourvedre and 20% Syrah and is loaded with concentrated flavors of blackberries, raspberries, mint and fennel, with an earthy, herbaceous feel. Black pepper, dark chocolate and baking spices appear as well, with a medium+ body and balanced, cooperative tannins and acid. The last words in my note about this wine are underlined and sums things up simply; concentrated, ripe, and herbaceous. I’d throw delicious in there as well.
