The historic Domaine du Mont Epin Macon Peronne was purchased by seasoned St. Veran winemakers Richard and Stephane Martin in 2015. The 40 year old Chardonnay vines face west, halfway up a mighty slope comprised of pebbly clay and limestone. Keep going up the hill and you run into Mont Epin, the highest point in the Macon. The forested hilltop provides shelter for the vineyard, which allows for a long hang time and maximum ripening. The grapes are certified organic by Ecocert and the wines are sensational; fleshy, ripe Chardonnay, resonating yellow fruit aromas and flavors, as well as sunshine. The vibe of the wine feels effortless, not a lot of hand wringing over barrels and such. Just straight forward, delicious Chardonnay.
Tasting Note: This 100% Chardonnay from Domaine Mont Epin is a ripe, yellow-fruited, medium bodied Burgundy. Native yeasts provide the fermentation and ageing takes place in stainless steel on fine lees for 10 months before bottling. Lifted aromas and flavors of peaches, pears, golden delicious apples, perfumed white flowers and brine. The acid is high, giving lots of freshness and lift to the wine. It will also provide aid for some development of flavor over the next ten years.
