The Ego Bodegas Goru Verde Monastrell 2018 is produced by Santos Ortiz, Ioana Paunescu and winemaker Luis Javier Perez in the Jumilla region of Spain. They started Ego Bodegas in 2011 with 35 hectares of Monastrell, the dominate red grape variety of the region. The vineyards are gratefully close to the Mediterranean; since the region gets monstrously hot, but the nights are able to stay cool due to the closeness of the sea and the high altitude. We love this wine; the words underlined in my notebook are “very ripe fruit” and “baked earth”. Qualities that sound like a great comfort on an overcast, drizzly day in the Pacific Northwest.

Tasting note: The Monastrell grapes in this bottle are certified organic have an average age of 25 years. Youthful aromas and flavors of cherries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, fig, dark chocolate, orange, lavender and baked earth. The wine is dry with a lot of high frequencies. The body, alcohol, and acid all got medium+ in my notes. The tannins come in at a medium. The high acid and tannin in the mix keep things lively and fresh. The finish is long and there is room for development. An unbeatable bargain in our book.
