The Lo Certo family of Sicily are the makers of the 2014 Antica Tenuta del Nanfro Sammauro Cerasuolo di Vittoria. Proud pioneers of organic viticulture, they farm 37 hectares of vines located near the ancient city of Caltagirone. In addition to growing Nero d’Avola, Frappato, and Inzolia, they have a restaurant and nice rooms to rent on the property. Cerasuolo di Vittoria is a red wine made in the southeast corner of Sicily, snug in the volcanic foothills of Mount Etna. According to DOCG rules, Cerasuolo di Vittoria must be made of at least 40% Frappato and no more than 60% Nero d’Avola. These grapes blended together make an outstanding wine. Year in and out, these wines exceed expectations. They don’t fetch nearly a high enough price. This is true value. We are big fans.

Tasting note: Cerasuolo, meaning “cherry” in Italian. A perfectly appropriately name for this wine. Lifted, developing aromas of cherries, campfire, dark chocolate, and licorice. There is also an attractive mushroom, gamey note . The palate reinforces the dried cherry fruit flavor with an excellent shot of acidity, medium body and medium tannin. This is a big, smoky mouthful of delicious cherry red juice with dashes of salinity, earth, and smoke with a long finish. This Cerasuolo di Vittoria could pair with a very wide range of foods, but fits most perfectly with Caponata.
