We were lucky to get our hands on a few bottles of the The Meinklang Tag 2018, made from 100% Gewurztraminer. And check out that amazing label! Meinklang recruited artist Billy Ward to create four labels for a special series of wines related to time (morgen, tag, abend, nacht). The label for Tag is our favorite, an eye popping interpretation of a fresh and vibrant Gruner Veltliner reaching for the sun. Really pops on the shelf. Alright, enough about the label. First, Tag goes through carbonic maceration for a few weeks, then ferments with native yeasts. Lastly, it spends nine months in concrete eggs before being bottled. The wine is bottled fresh and hazy and ready to drink, but happy to be held.

Tasting note: Tag is made in a fast and light style from 15 year old Gruner Veltliner vines. It is golden in color and has a little bit of haze to it. The aromas and flavors are vivid, with bright green apples, lemons and their peels, pear, seaweed, honeydew melon, pineapple, and bubbling yeast with some searing, limey acid. It has a whiff of exotic spice and a tiny bit of residual co2. Long finish, high acidity and highly complex. It has enough acid for good development and it’ll be fascinating to see what happens in the near future.
